Lorikeets return to Micke Grove Zoo April 30 | Animal Lovers
LODI - Lorikeets!, a popular interactive exhibit of over 50 colorful parrots has returned to Micke Grove Zoo and will debut on Saturday, April 30. At the zoo, visitors can purchase a small cup of lorikeet "nectar", a specialized diet, then feed the inquisitive and gregarious birds.
Native to eastern Australia and some nearby islands, lorikeets, unlike typical seed-eating parrot species, are uniquely adapted to feed on nectar, pollen and soft fruits. They play a significant role in pollinating the many flowering plants that form the basis of their diet.
Lorikeets comprise over 50 unique species, eight of which are represented in the Micke Grove Zoo exhibit. The birds will remain at the zoo through September when they will return to their winter home in Florida. This is the third year that Lorikeets! has been at the zoo where, during their first two visits, the birds attracted record crowds and rave reviews.
Located west of Highway 99 between Stockton and Lodi, Micke Grove Zoo opens daily at 10:00 a.m. Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for those from three to 17 years of age. Children two years and younger, and members of the Micke Grove Zoological Society, receive free admission. There is an additional charge for admission to Micke Grove Park of $5.00 per car.
