Rippon Road neighbors react to 12 year old's arrest

VALLEY SPRINGS, CA - For the first time in 15 days, Rippon Road is no longer guarded by deputy or CHP officer. Instead of law enforcement vehicles, only purple ribbons lined the street to remember the little girl who loved the color.

"Everybody speculates and everybody said this and that, but I just prayed," said Mary Gallagher, a friend of the Fowler grandparents.
"I prayed it wasn't him."

Saturday evening, Leila Fowler's 12 year-old brother was arrested on homicide charges in her stabbing death. The boy originally told deputies an intruder broke into the house and killed his sister. After a multi-agency manhunt and two thousand hours canvassing the neighborhood, the Sheriff announced the boy was no longer their only witness, but the person they believe responsible.

"The citizens of Calaveras County can sleep a little better tonight," said Sheriff Gary Kuntz at the Saturday evening press conference.

Detectives study knives in Valley Springs girl's stabbing

VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) - Investigators searching for evidence in connection with the stabbing death of an 8-year-old girl are looking at several knives to determine if one could have inflicted the fatal wounds.

Sgt. Chris Hewitt of the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office would not say from where investigators had recovered the knives but that the information would "come out eventually."

He declined to say whether they were confiscated from the rural home victim Leila Fowler shared with her father, stepmother, 12-year-old stepbrother and two older siblings.

The 12-year-old stepbrother discovered Fowler's body Saturday, April 27, while the parents were at a Little League game. He said he saw the assailant and described him as being tall with long gray hair.

A witness who said she also saw the man flee has since recanted.

Witness discredited in 8-year-old girl's murder case

VALLEY SPRINGS, CA - The second witness in the investigation into the murder of an 8-year-old girl was deemed not credible by Calaveras County sheriff's detectives.

Leila Fowler was found stabbed in her family's Rippon Road home by her 12-year-old brother Saturday afternoon. The brother told deputies he called his parents after someone broke into the home. His parents called 911. The boy said after he called his parents he ran into another room where he found his sister Leila with severe injuries.

Leila was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died, the sheriff's department said. Her brother was not injured.

The boy vaguely described the intruder as white or Hispanic and said that he may have long, gray hair and a large frame. A second witness came forward and collaborated the brother's description on two separate occasions.

Grandfather: Slain granddaughter loved musical instruments

STOCKTON, CA - The grandfather of Leila Fowler said Tuesday his granddaughter loved visiting his Stockton home, for all his musical instruments.

"As soon as she comes over, she runs into the back room, and says, 'grandpa, grandpa.' And I get [ the guitar] hooked up for her. She plays it without any encouragement. She wants to do it on her own," Dennis Fowler said.

On Saturday, Leila, 8, and her 12-year-old brother were home alone when someone broke into their home on Rippon Road, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department said. The boy called his parents, who then called 911. The boy then ran into another room where he found his sister with severe injuries.

Leila was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died, the sheriff's department said; her brother was not injured.

Fowler said his family is struggling to understand how deadly violence could take such a young and innocent life, in a town that's seemingly safe.

Search continues for suspect wanted in connection to child's murder

Search continues for suspect wanted in connection to child's murder

VALLEY SPRINGS, CA - Authorities search for a man wanted in connection to the death of a 9-year-old girl.

A homicide investigation is underway by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office after a young girl was killed at a home on Rippon Road, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff deputies responded to the home after a 12-year-old boy called his parents saying there was an intruder in the home. The parents called 911 and deputies responded to the call.

The boy, who was home alone with his 9-year-old sister, tells investigators that he then went into another room in the home where he discovered his sister with severe injuries.

The girl was transported to a hospital where she later died.  The boy was not injured.

Investigators have not released the type of injuries the girl sustained, but do say that it does not appear that she was shot.

Alcohol suspected in fatal San Joaquin Co. wreck

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY - An alleged DUI driver is said to be responsible for colliding with two cars, which killed another driver, early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says that Phi Nguyen of Stockton was driving his 2002 Toyota eastbound on State Route 12 near Peatland Rd around 1:30 a.m. when he veered into oncoming traffic due to his intoxication.

The Toyota collided head-on with a Cadillac, then continued driving eastbound where he then collided with a Volkswagen before rolling over.

The driver of the Cadillac, a 61-year-old man from Antioch, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volkswagon sustained major injuries and he was transported to a local hospital.

According to a CHP press release, Nguyen suffered major injuries and was transported to a local hospital. He has been placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol which caused the collision.
