Gusty winds prompt health caution

Gusty winds prompt health caution

Blowing dust in San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, and the valley portion of Kern counties poses potential health concern

Local air pollution officials are issuing a health cautionary statement effective through Wednesday night, May 22, 2013, because of blowing dust resulting from gusty winds. The health caution is in effect for San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, and the valley portion of Kern counties.

Winds may produce areas of localized dust, which can result in unhealthy concentrations of particulate matter 10 microns and smaller (PM10). Exposure to particulate pollution can cause serious health problems, aggravate lung disease, trigger asthma attacks and bronchitis, and increase risk of respiratory infections.

Bay Delta Conservation Plan will fail to restore the estuary

by Dan Bacher |
Tuesday, March 20 was a busy day for Restore the Delta (RTD), a coalition opposed to the Brown administration's rush to construct massive peripheral tunnels to divert millions of acre-feet of water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to corporate agribusiness, oil companies and Southern California developers.
Representatives of the group, along with fishermen, environmentalists, and other Delta advocates, testified at both a public meeting in West Sacramento to discuss the first three chapters of revised Bay Delta Conservation Plan proposal and a State Water Resources Control Board (SWRB) meeting in Sacramento hearing regarding San Joaquin River flows.  Photo of San Joaquin River below Friant Dam by Dan Bacher... $500 Million Lodi, CA Energy Center powers up

The 300-megawatt natural gas Lodi Energy Center is fully operational as of Tuesday, bringing clean energy to the Valley.

The $500 million project - $388 million for construction and $112 million in debt service - had been under construction for two years and will generate power used partially for Lodi homes and businesses, but also for BART trains and computer technology manufacturers in the Silicon Valley.

Tuesday's startup, which comes two months after its projected opening in September, means subscribers will be using the plant's power, and power will eventually be sold onto the California electricity grid.

"It's the official Commercial Operating Date, so it's an exciting day for us," Lodi Electric Utility Director Liz Kirkely said Tuesday afternoon.

Kids Don’t Float

Kids Don’t Float

The Kids Don’t Float program launched today along the Mokelumne River. The program focuses on safe recreation for families visiting the river by providing life preservers for use on the river between Mokelumne River Day Use Park and Stillman Magee Regional Park.

Visitors can pick up and return the life preservers at both parks and at the Clements Fire Station, located at 18901 E. Highway 88, Clements. The program’s main focus is children, however, adult-sized life preservers will also be available.

This is the third year of the Kids Don’t Float program, which was started after a tragic drowning on the river in April 2009.

A brochure of the program can be found on the San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation website.
