CHP: 2 women, 2 men dead in Highway 12 head-on crash | News
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA - Three people from Fairfield and a man from Tracy were killed in a head-on collision on Highway 12 New Year's Eve. California Highway Patrol officers are still trying to piece together what caused two cars, alone of a quiet stretch of the Delta, to crash.
The Fairfield victims, two women ages 23 and 28, and a man, age 31, were in a 2002 Hyundai sedan that emergency responders found overturned on its roof in a ditch just south of highway on the west side, approximately one mile from the Sacramento County line, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver from Tracy was in a 2012 Toyota sedan sitting wrecked across the westbound and eastbound lanes of the highway, Sgt. Aaron Rohner said.
Paramedics pronounced the two drivers and two passengers in their vehicles dead at the scene.
Based on front-end damage on both cars, Rohner said CHP investigators determined the two vehicles had slammed into each other head-on at approximately 9:30 p.m.
"Any time you have a collision like this where you have everybody - only two cars involved, three victims in one car, one victim in the other, no witnesses - we don't have anyone to tell us any statements," said Sgt. Kyle Plant.
"So what that leaves us with is piecing things together based on vehicle damage and physical evidence."
The highway was closed until the early morning hours Tuesday for the removal of the cars and the investigation.
Rohner said it wasn't known yet if alcohol played a part.
Anyone who witnessed what happened was urged to contact the CHP at (209) 943-8600.
