Lorikeets return to Micke Grove Zoo April 30

LODI - Lorikeets!, a popular interactive exhibit of over 50 colorful parrots has returned to Micke Grove Zoo and will debut on Saturday, April 30. At the zoo, visitors can purchase a small cup of lorikeet "nectar", a specialized diet, then feed the inquisitive and gregarious birds.

Native to eastern Australia and some nearby islands, lorikeets, unlike typical seed-eating parrot species, are uniquely adapted to feed on nectar, pollen and soft fruits. They play a significant role in pollinating the many flowering plants that form the basis of their diet.

Lorikeets comprise over 50 unique species, eight of which are represented in the Micke Grove Zoo exhibit. The birds will remain at the zoo through September when they will return to their winter home in Florida. This is the third year that Lorikeets!

4th Annual Galt Winter Bird Festival

GALT - The City of Galt, in partnership with the Cosumnes River Preserve and Galt Joint Union Elementary School District, will host the 4th annual Winter Bird Festival on Saturday, Jan. 29.

The festival has proven to be a successful display of nearly 100 bird species that routinely winter in the Galt area, specifically along the Cosumnes River Preserve.

The free festival will begin at 8 a.m. at McCaffery Middle School, located at 997 Park Terrace Drive in Galt. Tours will be held starting as early as 5:30 a.m. at a cost of $10 per adult. Youth under the age of 18 years old are free, but space is limited.
